3 Tips For Bowling Beginners – Let The Fun Begin!

Have you been an occasional, casual or recreational bowler for some time now? Maybe you finally decided to take the leap and join your first league. Perhaps you collapsed under the pressure of your office colleagues and joined the company’s bowling team ?

Anyway, there is help for you – and it starts right here!

I have been an avid bowler for over thirty years; and offering bowling tips for beginners gives me the greatest satisfaction as a coach. Whether the beginner is a young child who is going for the first time, or an adult who has bowled once or twice a year for 20 years and wants to improve, people who really want to learn can improve under your eyes, especially those of the beginner level. I have some simple tips that can dramatically change their game.

I remember when I was at this stage of the game at Bowling , there are many moons … I was a very athletic kid and I was quickly discouraged if I could not adapt quickly to a sport. If I did not feel I was getting better quickly, I was inclined to pack my bags and move on to the next step.

Fortunately for me, when I joined my first bowling league at age 13, there was a lot of help available. Every Saturday morning, my friends and I were riding in the bowling alley with one of our parents (THANK YOU PARENTS). The league for 13-18 year olds started at 8:30 in the morning. It’s a bit painful for us after being at school all week, but we really had a good time.

Once we settled on our pair of lanes and started playing bowling, the coaches started going up and down the bowling center, helping anyone who seemed to need it along the way.

I remember one particular coach, not by name, but because he was the eldest and was a retired police officer. He had no children in this league, but he played in the Seniors League after us and he got up early to help us all. What a great guy, and a great coach! The tips that I will share with you are the first ones I remember he gave me. One Saturday morning, he saw how frustrated I was, he took me aside and broke those three basic principles of bowling.

1. Use the weight ball suited to your height.

Choose the   heavier bowling ball that you can cast without compromising your ability to have a full, relaxed arm swing, good speed, and not lose your balance or drop the ball early. A good rule of thumb is to roll 1 pound of pound per 10 pounds of body weight, then add or subtract 1 pound. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds, start with a 12-pound ball. It may seem too heavy at first, but as long as you have a full arm swing and relaxed, good speed, and it does not make you lose your balance or drop the ball earlier than expected. If this is not the case, increase or decrease your weight accordingly.

2. Use the lane to help you aim.

When you stand on the ready approach to start your shot, when you look at the driveway you will notice a variety of marks. About 15 feet down the aisle, there is a series of arrows pointing to the bowling pins. Most bowlers look at these arrows rather than bowling when aiming. Why ? In simple terms, it is easier to reach a target closer to you. So start bowling and watch your ball roll over the arrows, making sure you’re in the same position to start each time – use the dots at the front of the driveway to position your feet. Note where the ball crossed the arrows when you hit the head keel. This will be your “mark”.

3. Do not worry about strikes.

Nobody has a strike every time. If you put that kind of pressure on yourself, you will not enjoy yourself. I always thought it was the idea behind the games – have fun! Focusing on the technique will help you improve. Once you have developed the mentioned brand at Tip # 2, make sure that you actually watch your ball roll on it every time. If you hit it and the result is always different, consider developing another brand. Strikes will come, work your technique and get these spare parts; you will see that some strikes will sneak in after a while.

Have fun in the fairways and good bowling !!!!!
