IVG: everything you need to know about voluntary termination of pregnancy

Voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion), or abortion, is the medical procedure that allows women to terminate an unwanted pregnancy before it ends. Methods, regulations or support, zoom in on everything you need to know.

What is an abortion?
Voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion), or abortion, refers to the anonymous medical procedure that allows all women to terminate an unwanted pregnancy before its term, more precisely before its 14th week of gestation, i.e. the 12th week of pregnancy. Supervised by the Weil law of January 17, 1975, abortion takes place in a specialized center and can only be performed by a doctor.

What are the different methods of abortion?
In France, there are two methods of abortion.

The drug method : carried out in a specialized center, at the hospital, by an approved general practitioner, a midwifeor a gynecologist, it consists of taking two different drugs, a few days apart, intended to terminate the pregnancy. Concretely, the first drug aims to interrupt the pregnancy, to trigger uterine contractions and dilation of the cervix. The second, meanwhile, will cause the expulsion of the egg, as in a miscarriage. This will result in bleeding (more important than that triggered by the rules). As for the pain felt, it will vary depending on the patient. If they are strong, the doctor can then prescribe painkillers for his patient. 100% reimbursed by Health Insurance, drug abortion can be carried out until the seventh week of pregnancy.

The surgical method (or instrumental IVG by aspiration) : practiced under local or general anesthesia, the method by aspiration is carried out in a specialized center or in the hospital. The doctor will dilate his patient’s cervix and aspirate what’s inside with a small tube. Depending on the anesthesia, the duration of hospitalization will generally last from a few hours for local anesthesia to one day for general anesthesia. The doctor in charge of the operation will then check the pulse of his patient, take his blood pressure and monitor any bleeding after the intervention. As for the side effects, they will vary from patient to patient. Some may feel a little fever and stomach achefor a few hours. A follow-up visit will also be scheduled a few weeks after the abortion. 100% reimbursed by Health Insurance, surgical abortion can be performed up to the 14th week of amenorrhea, i.e. the 12th week of pregnancy.

IVG: what are the regulatory deadlines?
In France, a woman can abort up to 12 weeks of pregnancy (14 weeks of amenorrhea). Until the seventh week, she can choose between two methods, namely medication or surgery. Between the seventh and 12th week of pregnancy, she will have surgical abortion.

In practice, how does a first consultation for a voluntary termination of pregnancy go?
When a woman wishes to terminate her pregnancy before her term, more precisely before her 14th week of amenorrhea, ie the 12th week of pregnancy, she will then make a first medical visit to a general practitioner, a gynecologist or to a health center. family planning. This is a first informative visit, in which the doctor will verify the will of his patient. He will then refer him to a colleague who can start the procedure, or start the procedure himself, after respecting what is called the “period of reflection”, provided for by law. For seven days, the patient will then reflect on her decision.

If she still wishes to have an abortion after this period, the intervention will take place during the second appointment. She can abort using the two methods that exist in France. Of course, this will depend on the term of the pregnancy and the choice of the woman concerned.

IVG: what are the risks?
Like any medical practice, side effects can appear (fevers, abdominal pain, malaise, blood loss …), but these remain rare. If they appear, contact the doctor who looked after you immediately.

Abortion (as it is practiced in France, by trained medical personnel, with sterile equipment and within the confines of a medical establishment, does not present any risk of sterility .

Where to do an abortion and who to contact for information?
Abortions can be performed in planning centers and health centers, in hospitals or in medical offices (by gynecologists, certain registered general practitioners and certain midwives).

Here is the link of the different planning centers in France : here .

On the other hand, if the person who wishes to terminate her pregnancy is a minor, she must obtain the written consent of an adult to have an abortion. It may then be a parent or an adult who will be responsible for accompanying him throughout the procedure. The minor will also have to take part in a psychosocial interview before the intervention.
